Steven Dixon loves all things technology.
Dixon is bringing that love of technology, along with his technology engineering skills, to Duncan Middle School. He is the new technology exploration teacher at DMS this school year.
“He’s nice and lenient to his students,” J’hari Dorn, one of Dixon’s seventh-grade students, said.
Dorn was one of several students who all said they enjoyed Dixon’s class. She said that students rarely get in trouble in his class because Dixon knows how to keep students in line.
She also said the class does not have an over abundance of work, which is something that also appeals to students.
“He gives little work, which makes sense why his class isn’t hard,” Dorn said.
Dixon teaches sixth, seventh and eighth-grade students at different times during the day. Through the class, students learn how to best use computers, coding and other computer-based lessons.
His technology skills developed through his upbringing, and he is glad to work with his students. Aside from working with them in class, Dixon also hosts an after-school program, Beyond the Bell.
He brought his skill from New York, where he grew up before going to Penn State to get his degree that allows him to teach.
He came to Duncan after playing football, rugby and boxing for Penn State and for his own personal enjoyment. The move to Duncan was brought about when he met his now wife who introduced him to Oklahoma.
If he had the chance, he would’ve gone professional in football. If he hadn’t become a teacher, he would have likely been a full time painter.
Fernando Garcia-Diaz said he also enjoys Dixon’s class.
Garcia-Diaz said he gets to build and talk with his friends during class. He also said Dixon is one of his favorite teachers because he loves his class and the subject in general.
