DMS celebrates the end of school

The school year is coming to an end, and students and teachers are looking forward to Summer Break.

Duncan Middle School returned to session from last summer on Aug. 14, 2025. Today marks the last day of the school year for students. Teachers will have a work day Friday.

“I am glad that the school year is ending, but I am going to miss my friends,” seventh-grader Lilly Huynh said. “I am also so excited for eighth grade and the summer.”

For students, Summer Break begins Friday and will go until Aug. 13, when students return to the classrooms.

This morning, eighth-graders have been participating in the annual eighth-grade picnic. However, the threat of rain forced the event to take over the gym.

The annual dodgeball tournament, which is hosted by Student Council and that began Wednesday, is being delayed until after seventh-grade lunch today, as a result of the picnic’s location move.

Sixth and seventh-grade students are going through their first hour hours of class, as they would on any other day. Some classes are playing games, some worked on projects and others found different ways to keep students engaged.

Kyle Juyad, sixth-grade student, said he is ready for the start of Summer Break.

“I am excited for the school year to end,” Juyad said. “I am going to miss my friends.”

He said he thinks next school year will be a successful one.

“I think I am ready for seventh grade,” Juyad said.

Seventh-grader Kaylee French and sixth-grade Mason Copeland said both said the end of the school year is bittersweet.

“I am sad, but also not sad at the same time,” French said.

For Copeland, the end of the school year is filled with mixed emotions.

“I am kind of sad, but I am looking forward to going to Florida this summer,” he said.
