Duncan Middle School has just added a girls flag football team to its lists of clubs and sports.

The group, led by Issac Mason and Steven Dixon, meets every Wednesday. The first meeting took place April 8.
Dixon said he started the team because he had a lot of girls wanting to play.
“Many girls were starting to ask and telling me if we could have a team for flag football,” Dixon said. “So Mason and I started to try to make a flag football team.”
The flag football team is open to girls in sixth through eighth grades with any skill level. Even if they are inexperienced, they can join.
Part of the program will teach girls how to play. As a result, more than 50 girls have signed up to play. Aside from signing up, the girls also had to turn in a parent consent form, which could be picked up outside of Dixon’s classroom, Room 802.
“I made it for girls because boys already had football, and I wanted the girls to have something for them too,” Dixon said. “The girls are excited to try this, and I hope they have a lot of fun from this program.”
Anne Strong, an eighth-grader, is among the students who signed up to join flag football this year.
“I am excited because I want to stay more active and play flag football with my friends,” Strong said.
Strong is happy she can play with zero experience or skill, and looks forward to learning more about the sport. She hopes she makes more friends from flag football and has a lot of fun from playing the sport.
“I hope I make more friends from this, so I can meet more people,” Strong said.
Dixon hopes to grow the program.
He said one of his goals is to have the team start competing in tournaments, as early as next school year.
