Duncan Middle School’s cross country has already found success this season.
Cross country had its first meet Saturday and did well with several team members placing.
Among the team members placing in the meet was eighth-grader Mason Sanders, who placed 12th on Saturday.
“I’m decent, but I have room to improve,” Sanders said about his performance on the team.
He said his least favorite race is the 1 and a half mile, which is the same distance middle school students who ran in Saturday’s race. His favorite race is the 1-mile because it is the shortest.
He said cross country can be hard because the team member practice when it is hot outside.
Even though he hasn’t medaled in cross country, he has won some medals in track, a sport he has been doing for the past three years.
“I want to do cross country later in life because it is a good way to stay in shape and it is fun,” Sanders said.
Sanders isn’t the only team member to place in Saturday’s meet.
Griffin Evans, another eighth-grader, placed first at the meet.
Evans said he put a lot of work into cross country by practicing a lot. He said he enjoys the sport because he is good at it.
“I’m the best runner because I lap everyone in practice,” he said.
His favorite race is the 1-mile. His least favorite is the 1 and a half mile because it is hard to place well.
In the three years he has been running cross country, Evans has medaled in the 1-mile and 1 and a half mile; he has also placed in track.
His longest race was a 5K.
“I want to run cross country late in life because I’m good at it,” Evans said.
Even though he didn’t get in run in Saturday’s cross country meet, eighth-grader Matthew Williams is excited about cross country this year.
He joined cross country when the season was already underway. He said he joined cross country because of his friends, and he likes that the sport keeps him active.
“I’m okay at cross country, but I’m not great at it,” Williams said.
