Although the school year just started, the DMS National Junior Honor Society is already looking at its future leadership.
The seventh-grade elections will be during the next NJHS meeting on Oct. 7.
During the meeting, candidates will give their speeches, and then NJHS members will vote on those candidates in the offices of president, vice president, secretary, treasurer, reporter/historian and parliamentarian. Those elected will shadow the current slate of officers.
Elliott Fiorillo, seventh-grade NJHS member, is one of two people running for president. The other candidate is seventh-grader Gabriel Hernandez.
“I am running for president because I feel like a good leader,” Fiorillo said. “I want to help everyone do better.”
She said she wanted to get move involved in the organization and found herself motivated to run for office. However, she knows that regardless of who wins the election, NJHS will be in good hands next year.
“I feel like my opponent is nice,” Fiorillo said. “I feel like if I don’t win it, I wont be mad. I’ll just accept that i didn’t win the election. And if I win, I’ll be happy about it. I’mm set on being president.”
President is one of two positions with multiple candidates. The other is vice president.
The remaining four positions have one candidate each. This includes the treasurer position, which Lily Reza is running for.

“I’m running for treasurer, so I can keep count of the money,” Reza said. “I got motivated by my cousins to run for treasurer since they did it before me.
“I can help out with accounting and keep track of the money.”
This year’s NJHS group has 113 members. That means, a candidate would have to receive at least 106 votes to win the position.
