This year rolled out a new Advisory period, which came complete with set guidelines per day. On Wednesdays, each class participates in character building.
Stacy Pena’s class is using the opportunity to help people outside of Duncan Middle School’s walls.
Pena’s class is heading up a pop tab drive, which help support parents and provide them with help. The pop tabs will be given to the Ronald McDonald House.
According to the Ronald McDonald House website, “RMHC programs and services help alleviate some financial burdens for families along their child’s healthcare journey. Last year alone, we helped families save $736 million in lodging and meal expenses.”
She said she thinks the tab drive is going well so far, but she think things will get even better the closer things get to the December deadline. She said people should participate because it is really easy to just get soda tabs.
Containers were delivered to other DMS classes to help collect the pop tabs. A challenge was even put in place with the class collecting the most pop tabs receiving a pizza party. Each of the classes participating in the pop tab drive were given a gallon-sized, water container to collect the pop tabs.
Ryan Brown thinks the pop tab drive is going to go well.
Brown, who is a seventh-grader in Pena’s second hour class, said he will try to remember to donate pop tabs from the Sprites he drinks.
Ana Reyna, another seventh-grade students in Pena’s class, said she hopes the pop tab drive goes well because it is tied to a good cause.
Reyna said she doesn’t drink soft drinks and hasn’t donated, but she may donated during the drive.
The deadline to donate pop tabs to the drive is Dec. 5. The awarded pizza party for the top collecting class will be celebrated Dec. 12.
