Duncan Middle School boys basketball is getting started, and the basketball players are ready to take to the court.
Eighth-grader Deakon Crow said he’s excited about this season and is ready to score more because he didn’t score enough last season. Crow has been playing basketball for three years, and his favorite thing about the game is how well his teammates work together.
“I need to work on making smarter passes, so we don’t have as many turnovers,” Crow said.
Layton Toomey, another eighth-grade player, has been playing basketball for 10 years, making him one of the most seasoned players on the team.
“The reason I started basketball is because my parents made me, but I ended up really enjoying it,” Toomey said.
For this season, he has set several personal goals for himself. By the end of the season, he wants to have more court IQ, so being able to read defense, run plays well, and make good passes.
Toomey said he’s excited for the season, but knows he needs to work on passing more and to make smarter passes when he does pass the ball.
Aside from eighth-grade, the seventh-grade boys basketball players are also gearing up for the season.
Maddox Bonham, a seventh-grade player, is hoping to develop as a ball handler this season and to have a better three-point shot. Bonham has been playing basketball for the past four years.
Although they are all ready for the season, they all said there are things they are not looking forward to.
For Crow and Bonham, they’re not looking forward to conditioning and running because those two activities are tiring. Crow said he’s also nervous about making mistakes and costing his team the game.
Bonham has a similar thought. He said he doesn’t want his team to get beaten badly because it would be embarrassing.
Toomey is dreading playing Lawton Eisenhower because the team is good. However, he is excited to play Lawton Central since the DMS basketball teams didn’t get to play Lawton Central last year.
