Duncan Middle School cheer competed in a competition a few weeks ago, bringing its school spirit and talent, to land in 7th place.
Eighth-grade cheer members Delaney Ward and Kyndall Howell said the team needs to be sharper to improve at competition.
Ward has been cheering for DMS for two years, starting as a seventh-grader. This is Howell’s first year on the team.
“I think we did the best we could at the competition,” Howell said.
She said their is a lot of talent on the team, and she likes the routine the cheer team performed during competition.
Ward said she was proud of the team.
“I think we performed well,” she said.
Something she thinks the team could improve on includes being louder, which would help the team be better for competition.
Ward agreed with Howell about the routine. She is also one of the team members who can tumble and do a variety of tricks, including back-hand springs and back tucks.
“Yes, I like competition because it’s fun, and the energy is high there,” Ward said.
Anniston Phillips, a seventh-grade cheerleader, said also felt the same about the routine. Phillips also likes her teammates, which makes her first year in cheer a pleasant one.
” I feel like at the competition we could have done better, and we could have scored higher,” Phillips said. “I also feel that we could have done better for the competition, that we could have spirited more and not look as scared as we did.”
Phillips has enjoyed her time as a cheerleader and has appreciated going to competition.
” Yes, I like competition,” Phillips said. “It’s a great experience for me.”
In addition to competition, the cheerleaders have also been on the sidelines of the football and basketball games so far this school year.
