Duncan Middle School eighth-graders got a look into career paths they could possibly follow, while maintaining their roots in Duncan.
On Wednesday and Thursday, eighth-grade students went on an industry tour with the DMS eighth-grade class split between the two days.
The industry tour was designed to teach the eighth-graders about jobs they could pursue when they become adults, and so that they could know what they are interested in for the future. This knowledge may be put to use, as they enter high school and have to make decisions on which classes would best serve them in the future.
The places the eighth-graders visited included Haliburton, Duncan Regional Hospital and a bank. Some students love the jobs they were presented with and were interested in working for when they are adults.
Eighth-grader Harper Ford, who went on the industry tour on Wednesday, said she was excited for the field trip. She found hospital jobs interesting and would want to go back to learn more about the jobs available at the hospital.
Ford said jobs in this field can be difficult because of the schooling required to get such jobs and get a lot of opportunities for related jobs. She learned that a lot of jobs in the hospital are overlooked because there are so many to work and pursue in.
Eighth-grade Khole Love went on the industry tour on Thursday. She said she found the engineering jobs interesting, even thought she doesn’t want to go into the career field.
“Engineering isn’t that hard, but it’s tricky,” Love said.
Counselor and coach Isaac Mason helped on the tours by making sure everyone was doing the right thing, while keeping behavior right and sharing information about the stuff they were learning about. He helped keep all the kids in line while they went to Haliburton, the hospital and the bank.
He thinks all the students had a little bit of fun while out of school the whole day. He said thinks a lot of people liked the jobs they were learning about.
