There are are few sure signs that it’s almost spring: The temperatures are getting warmer, the grass is getting greener and baseball is back in season.
Baseball season has started at Duncan Middle School with the players practicing and preparing for the their upcoming games.
This year’s baseball coaches are Jordon Dotson (head coach) and David Wingfield (assistant coach), both of whom teach at DMS.
“The best part of baseball is Dotson,” eighth-grade player Layton Toomey said.
Toomey said he is excited about the start of the season. And he’s not the only one.
Adler Trammell, seventh-grade player, said he thinks baseball is a great sport and is looking forward to improving his skills, including his pitching, this season.
“I am excited for baseball to start up,” Trammell said.
Both Toomey and Trammell bring experience to the Duncan Middle School team. Toomey has been playing baseball for 12 years, while Trammell has been playing for eight years.
Toomey said he hopes to be a leader for the other players, but said they were smart and cool.
“My advice for other players is just don’t get mad, keep your head up and work hard,” he said.
Toomey said he does have some areas to improve, including batting. He said he can always hit the batting cages to improve in this area.
Dotson said his goal for the season is to prepare his players for high school.
He said he enjoys the sports, but said there are always ups and downs when coaching a sport.
“The hardest thing about being a coach is these kids don’t listen, but I feel like my players are a good group of guys,” Dotson said.
