Duncan Middle School eighth-graders just took some steps toward the start of their high school careers.
Freshman enrollment for eighth-grade concluded last week. Those students were able to choose a pathway, which affects their electives classes in next year. The pathways are designed for career readiness.
As the students prepared to enter Duncan High School, several expressed excitement and nervousness about the change in schools.
Maelyn Monteith, an DMS eighth-grader, said she wanted band, tennis and media production for her classes.
During the enrollment process, students and their families scheduled appointments to enroll. When it got to their appointment time, they were called out of class and met with a district employee to being the enrollment process with their parents.
Monteith said the enrollment process was pretty easy and that she is excited for high school.
Kyndall Howell, another eighth-grader, said she wanted to enroll in Spanish II and graphic design as elective classes.
Howell said she wished there were more elective classes available. She said that, depending on the pathway each student chose, they would have a select number of elective that would follow that pathway.
She thinks she will do well with the elective classes she chose.
Howell said she thought it was easy to enroll for high school. She said high school education is really important, and she is excited to be a high schooler.
Eighth-grader Harper Ford said she wanted sports, Spanish and weightlifting as her elective classes.
Ford is also excited about high school, but she is concerned about the pathways program because it can be limiting for students trying to choose classes. She said she will do well in the classes she chose.
She said that enrolling students were asked what they wanted, and the students chose. She said the process only took about 5 minutes to do.
