The Duncan Middle School has a new policy regarding cell phones.
The new policy states that students are allowed to have their phones on their person. Also, they have to leave their cell phones with the teacher to leave the room, especially when going to the bathroom.
Assistant Principal Rodney Strutton said, “We changed the policy just because we think it’s common sense.”
Last year, students were told to leave their cell phones in their lockers. If a student was caught with their cell phone in class, the phone was taken to the office by a teacher for a parent to pick up.
This year, cell phones are only taken to the office if a student is seen using the cell phone in class without the teacher’s permission.
“Three phones have been confiscated this year,” Strutton said. “We’re not exactly sure how that compares to last year because it’s the beginning of the year, and we’re giving the students some leeway for the first few weeks.”
Strutton said the school’s administration hopes students will follow the cell phone policy, which is designed with the students in mind.
“I think the policy is very effective,” Strutton said. “Our goal with this new policy is to make sure that education is the main focus this year.”
