Editor’s Note: This is the first in a three part series about OCCT state testing as if pertains to Duncan Middle School. Each part of the series will be written by a different journalism student and will appear over the next three days.
Toward the end of the school year, math OCCT testing will go on as usual, with on major addition.
This year, students will be able to use a calculator on the test to help students with their math. Duncan Middle School students have mixed feelings about this change in the test format.
“It’s a lot better because you can save more paper,” seventh-grader Alana Lee said.
Lee said this addition should make things easier for students and should help reduce the stress on students caused by testing.
Xavier Alston, another DMS seventh-grader, said he is glad students will get to use the calculators because it will reduce the burden on the students.
But do the students feel like using a calculator might feel like cheating?
“There should be a price for using them, like passing all your classes,” Lee said. “And no, I don’t feel like it’s cheating.”
She said she thinks it’s alright for the state to add a tool for students to use because it does remove the weight of the stressful test.
“I wold not add more tools or remove them,” Lee said. “And I will probably be using the calculator on the test.”
