Duncan Middle School is keeping with the Red Ribbon Week ideals and working to keep students drug-free.
Red Ribbon Week officially started on Thursday and will run through this Friday. The week always goes from Oct. 23 to 31.
This week’s theme is “Life’s a Puzzle; Solve It Drug Free.” At DMS, Student Council teams up with the Wichita Mountains Prevention Network for Red Ribbon Week efforts.
“I think it is a good reminder of being drug-free,” Student Council Reporter Delaney Ward said.
Ward, an eighth-grader, was part of this year’s Red Ribbon Week Committee, which is part of Student Council. This year, eighth-grade Paige Bates stepped up to be the committee chair.
The committee developed several ways to get students involved in the drug-free movement.
This week featured dress-up days, an essay contest, a poster contest, door decorating, pledge cards and a banner outside the school building.
Bella Christian, the Student Council vice president, said she thinks Red Ribbon Week is a good reminder for parents to talk to their students about drugs and how to remain drug-free, and vice versa.
“You could talk to your parent about being drug-free,” Christian said.
The week will also have an assembly on Wednesday. The Student Council officers will lead the assembly.
Seventh-grader Aubrey Washington said she thinks Red Ribbon Week is important. She said it helps students address concerns, when it comes to drugs.
This year, the dress-up days include:
- Oct. 23: Pajama Day
- Oct. 24: Red Out Day
- Oct. 27: Country Vs. Country Club
- Oct. 28: Twin Day
- Oct. 29: Color Wars (sixth grade-purple, seventh grade-green, eighth grade-orange, teachers-black)
- Oct. 30: Favorite Movie Character Day
- Oct. 31: Freaky Friday (crazy hair, silly socks, mismatched clothes)
Ward said her favorite of the dress-up days was Country Vs. Country Club. For Christian, the favorite was crazy hair. Washington said she liked Pajama Day.
