Football season is underway, and soon players will be taking to the field for their first game.
The first football games of the season are scheduled for Tuesday, as the Duncan Demons face off against Lawton Eisenhower Vikings, with the seventh-grade game starting at 5:30 p.m. The eighth-grade game is slated to follow.
“The fun part of my job is getting to watch the kids play and helping them,” Coach Isaac Mason said.
Mason has been coaching since 2018. He said he enjoys his job and working with the kids.
This year, Zander Van Bebber is the eighth-grade quarterback, and Kingston Myers is the seventh-grade quarterback.
“I love my position very much, but it is hard sometimes,” Van Bebber said.
He’s not the only player who is ready for the season to start.
Eighth-graders Carson Nalley and Breken Condit said they enjoy playing football because they get to hit people. Nalley is a cornerback and safety, while Condit is a tight end and defensive end.
Many of the kids on the teams have been playing football for a number of years. JD Gdanski, eighth-grade player, for instance, has been playing football since he was 6 years old.
Gdanski role on the football team is offensive guard.
Many of the other players have been active in the team sport for at least three years.
Mason said he enjoys his coaching position and getting to work with the players. He said the biggest thing he would change in the team would be ownership.
“The hardest part about my job is the kids who don’t get to play. It’s not fair,” Mason said.
Mason has football experience, having played in high school. He said he likes being a coach and getting to watch the kids play after they have been working hard to prepare for their games.
