It may sound like heavy topics, but Duncan Middle School students are learning about government, amendments to the U.S Constitution and their rights, much of which many adults in their lives may not know.
To help lighten the load in off-season and the class sizes for electives, a new civic class has been added to the last hour of the school day this year.
Two sections of civics are being offered to students who drop off sport and are no longer in off-season. The class sections are being taught by seventh-grade social studies teachers Chuck Wagner and Ashley Ford.
Wagner and Ford said they both enjoy the classes and the subject material.
“Love it,” Wagner said.
Wagner and Ford both teach about government, voting, constitutional amendments, rights and how to be a good citizen. Both teachers find the class enjoyable because they get to teach government to their students, who are also enjoying learning about the government.
Tripp Harris and Oscar Tovar, both seventh-graders at DMS, are a couple of the students enrolled in the civics class.
Harris said the class can be hard for him at times because of the work the students do, since he is still learning about government.
He said he likes having friends in class, and he find the subject interesting, even though he doesn’t like the class much. He also ends up with the same teacher twice in one day.
Tovar had similar thoughts about the civics class and its curriculum.
He said the class could be difficult.
“It is because it’s complex,” Tovar said.
Similarly to Harris, Tovar also likes having friends in class. He said the subject is interesting because he learns about the government and how it works.
Tovar said he enjoys the class and is learning something new every day.
