The DMS NJHS’s annual toy drive wraps up today, and the number of toys continues to grow.
The NJHS toy drive collects toys for the Toy Shop of Duncan, a non-profit organization that helps provide Christmas gifts for Duncan children, who wouldn’t have Christmas otherwise.
This toy drive has been an NJHS staple every December since 2022.
“I donated because I wanted to help kids,” eighth-grade NJHS member Mckinley Giles said.
Giles was one of a number of students who donated toy for the toy drive. The toys are scheduled to be collected by the Toy Shop this morning.
The toy drive has been going since Dec. 1. Some of the items requested by the Toy Shop include baby dolls, dolls, RC cars and items for middle school students. However, other toys will be welcomed.
The items donated have to be in their original packaging.
Hannah Woods, another eighth-grade NJHS member, also donated items to the toy drive. Members were able to earn service points for their membership requirements.
“It will help kids because it gives them stuff they don’t have and makes them joyful,” Hannah Woods said.
The toy drive is one of a multitude of service projects the DMS NJHS does throughout the year. Other drives include a non-perishable food drive for Christians Concerned in September, and a book drive for the Little Libraries in February.
These service projects are designed to give back to the community.
NJHS adviser Derrick Miller has coordinated efforts with the toy shop to make this year’s toy drive a reality. And with Christmas coming up in a couple of weeks, Miller hopes the efforts of the NJHS will meet the needs of the children and families in need.
“This is one of my favorite projects NJHS does during the year,” Miller said. “I always love to see the NJHS members doing what they can to help others. That’s really what the organization is all about.”
